I think that these Nymph lamps made with pierced coconut shells are magical and i’d love one myself. Created by the Lithuanian artist Vainius Kubilius, each coconut shade is drilled by hand and the spine of the lamp is wrapped in suede or faux leather.  They are available to order from Kubilius’ website for approximately US$220.

Ice-cream Bucket Library

microlibrary at Taman Bima

Generally I’m not a fan of repurposing materials in design. I’m perfectly content with designing to minimise waste, of using biodegradable or recyclable materials, or using recycled materials but there is something about using materials readily identifiable as ‘trash’ that upsets my design sensibilities. That said, hat’s off to the architects Shau who used 2,000 used ice cream buckets to provide ventilation and daylight on the Taman Bima microlibrary in Bandung, Indonesia.

Zero Waste Light

August 18, 2016

cardboard tube light from waarmakers

Zero waste is the new buzz word on the block and what better way to blend this with design that to create a light out of it’s own packaging, which is exactly what design consultancy Waarmaker did.

R16 is their homage to beautiful and versatile cardboard tubin, which by applying laser cuts is converted into an elegant luminary.

Impressed? I am.

Colour Infographic

July 28, 2016

interior colour infographic

Choosing the right colour for a room can be tricky thing. You have to think about the hue, intensity and  tone plus existing materials and light levels in the space. It can get very confusing. It’s something that gets better with practice, which is why experienced interior designers can be a great help in devising striking colour schemes that work.

This infographic is a handy way of breaking down this complex process into bite-sized chunks but remember all factors have an effect on one another, i.e. an unsaturated bluey red can be both warming and calming depending on the existing light levels in a space.
